The August 31 meeting covered political ties, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility and contacts between people. Modi and Putin welcomed the outcome of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. The commission met in Moscow on August 24, shortly before the Bishkek summit. India and Russia have set a target of $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. Indian government figures show bilateral trade reached $59.86 billion in the 2025-26 financial year, with Russian exports to India accounting for most of the total.
Dialogue and diplomacy remain central to conflict discussions
Regional security featured prominently in the meeting as the leaders exchanged views on conflicts affecting West Asia and the Black Sea region. India said those conflicts have disrupted maritime trade and created risks for Indian seafarers. Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy should remain the path for resolving conflicts. During his remarks with Putin, he also called for an end to prolonged warfare and repeated India’s support for efforts aimed at achieving peace.
The leaders also discussed their countries’ engagement in BRICS, which India chairs in 2026. Modi told Putin that India looked forward to welcoming him for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13. The gathering will provide another scheduled forum for India and Russia to engage alongside other BRICS members. Their Bishkek talks therefore came less than two weeks before the summit in India and followed several bilateral meetings during the past year.
India and Russia reaffirm strategic partnership
Modi and Putin agreed to remain engaged as both countries work to strengthen their bilateral partnership. India’s Prime Minister’s Office said the relationship has continued to record growth despite wider geopolitical uncertainty. Cooperation spans established areas such as defence, nuclear energy and space, alongside trade, fertilisers, innovation and mobility. Energy remains a major component of commercial ties, while both sides continue working through government-led mechanisms designed to broaden economic cooperation beyond existing areas.
The Bishkek meeting placed bilateral economic cooperation and international conflicts within the same diplomatic agenda. It also reinforced the regular contact between Modi and Putin ahead of the BRICS gathering in India.
